Public Speaking Skills

Your story could change a life! Join BCRC’s Community Outreach Program and use your breast cancer experience to inspire and empower other women.

This two-day session will teach you how to identify the key parts of your story and deliver them with maximum impact. You will discover how to overcome your fears, and control the fidgeting, hand waving, blushing and “um-ing” that many of us suffer from. Discussions, small group work and role-plays led by trainer Mark McGrath from McGrath Communications Group will give you the confidence you need to talk about your breast cancer experience and help women take control of their breast health.

This course is open only to breast cancer survivors as well as sisters, mothers, daughters or spouses of breast cancer survivors. Spaces are limited and registrations will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis.

Peer Support Skills

Many breast cancer patients and survivors have a strong support network of family and friends that help them cope with the ups and downs of diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Some women are not so lucky. They don’t have a support network, and have to make their way through this difficult time alone. These women need your help!

The BCRC Peer Support Skills workshop will teach you how to use basic listening and communication skills including active listening, paraphrasing, open-ended questions, and reflection of feelings, in your role as a supporter. You will discover how values might impact your interactions, learn the differences between providing face-to-face and telephone support, and realize the importance of establishing boundaries. Discussions, small group work and role-plays led by trainer Mark Kiselica will give you the confidence you need to put everything you learn into practice as a BCRC Volunteer Peer Counselor or Peer Educator!
