Dragon Boating

Dragon boat paddling is an ancient sport that began 2000 years ago in China. Dragon boating emphasizes teamwork and timing. It is a perfect exercise for breast cancer survivors, as it can increase flexibility, range of motion, strength and aerobic capacity. Many paddlers feel that their teams become "floating support groups."

There are many dragon boat teams all over the world. BCRC’s team is the Machestic Dragons, New Jersey's first dragon boat team for breast cancer survivors. They paddle to help raise breast cancer awareness and to demonstrate that women living with breast cancer can lead full, active lives. You do not need to be physically fit to join, there is no age limit, and you don't even need to know how to paddle! Family and friends of team members are also encouraged to join the Machestic Dragons.

For more information about the Machestic Dragons, please log on to http://www.machesticdragons.org.

Exercises are tailored to all fitness levels and will focus on improving your flexibility, strength and stamina using exercise bands, balance balls, aerobics, yoga and stretching.

Healing Meditation and Yoga

Through meditation for healing, we can awaken and rejuvenate our bodies and our minds.
Healing meditation can help with:

♦ chronic fatigue ♦ insomnia

♦ depression ♦ memory

♦ chronic pain ♦ stress

♦ fear and anxiety ♦ immune system

Meditation for healing makes use of the natural healing energy we all have. It is a method of self healing that allows us to understand and overcome our pains and weaknesses. It helps us connect with our vulnerabilities, leading to an inner dialog that opens us up to our own healing power.

Instructor Einat Amitay will incorporate elements that support the practice, including breathing techniques, visualization, yoga postures and meridian stretches for opening the body’s energy channels, and mudra, hand postures that stimulate energy meridians. Meditation will be tailored to individual belief system and comfort level.

Guided Imagery Workshop Series

Many recorded guided imagery programs can support you in relaxing your body and focusing your mind in the comfort of your home. But each program claims to be the best! How do you choose the one that’s right for you?

In this workshop series, hypnotherapist and yoga teacher Karin Steinhaus will teach you ways to work with guided imagery so that you can maximize the results you get when you sit back, relax, and listen to recordings. In each session, you will have an opportunity to sample different recordings so that you can experience a variety of approaches and a variety of voices. We’ll provide you with lists of recordings we’ve especially enjoyed. If you would like to recommend your own favorites, we will be happy to include them, as well!

Healing Sounds Workshop

Sounds of gongs and drums vibrate deep into our bodies, resonating and aligning. Speaking in rhythm and singing gives voice to our feelings. Moving with others brings deep memories of former times and helps to balance our energies and emotions.

Take your body and soul out for a date to BCRC’s Healing Sounds Workshop. This exciting workshop is designed for breast cancer survivors of all ranges and abilities to use sounds, songs, instruments, and imagery as a way to promote physical and emotional healing. Connect and have fun with others affected by breast cancer by discovering some simple activities that you can do at home that may comfort you and help you deal with the ups and downs of your healing process. Learn a few simple chants, some mental imagery processes, some new kinds of music to move to, and some ways of moving that simply feel good. Included in the session will be a 10-minute warm-up/wake up that you can use to begin your day on a positive note.

Please note: You do NOT need musical talent or singing ability in order to take part in Healing Sounds!

Read what some BCRC Friends have to say about the power of sound:

“I really do believe that music can help healing. So to have an opportunity to make and experience music for healing, especially with other breast cancer people (is) wonderful.” — Meg

“Music brings me back to a more centered, peaceful state.” — Beth
